“They threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?”
What does Luke 20:15 mean?
Jesus is telling a parable about a landowner who sends servants to collect what's owed to him, but the tenants beat and reject each one. Finally, he sends his own son, hoping they'll respect him, but they kill him too. This question at the end forces listeners to confront what justice demands when someone has been so thoroughly rejected and harmed. The parable reflects Jesus's own reality: religious leaders are rejecting his message and, though his listeners don't yet know it, will soon move toward his execution. By asking "what will the lord do?" Jesus isn't predicting punishment with satisfaction, but rather inviting his audience to recognize the seriousness of rejecting God's final offer of relationship. The tragedy is theirs to choose.
