What does Luke 2:5 mean?

Joseph brought Mary along to Bethlehem for the census, even though she was visibly pregnant and not yet formally married to him. This detail shows us something tender about Joseph: he didn't abandon her or hide away from the scandal of her condition, but traveled with her and stood publicly beside her. It also reminds us that Mary and Joseph's story wasn't a clean, private affair—they were living out an unusual and difficult situation in a small-town world where everyone would notice and talk. The fact that Luke includes this detail suggests he wants us to see their courage and commitment to each other before Jesus was even born.
