What does Luke 2:5 mean?
Joseph brought Mary along to Bethlehem for the census, even though she was visibly pregnant and not yet formally married to him. This detail shows us something tender about Joseph: he didn't abandon her or hide away from the scandal of her condition, but traveled with her and stood publicly beside her. It also reminds us that Mary and Joseph's story wasn't a clean, private affair—they were living out an unusual and difficult situation in a small-town world where everyone would notice and talk.
