“Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to David’s city, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;”
What does Luke 2:4 mean?
Joseph had to travel from his home in Nazareth to Bethlehem because of a Roman census that required him to register in his ancestral hometown. As a descendant of King David's line, his family records traced back to Bethlehem, even though he and Mary lived far away in Galilee. This journey wasn't convenient or comfortable, especially with Mary heavily pregnant, but it was required by law. What might have felt like an inconvenient disruption to their plans turned out to be the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies about where the Messiah would be born, showing how God sometimes works through ordinary circumstances and earthly requirements to accomplish his purposes.
