What does Luke 2:44 mean?
Mary and Joseph had traveled with a large group heading home from Jerusalem after the Passover feast, so when they didn't see Jesus for a full day, they assumed he was somewhere in the crowd with relatives or friends. It's a strikingly human moment, showing how easily we can lose sight of what matters most when we're distracted or when we're relying on our assumptions rather than actually checking in. What makes this painful is that Jesus wasn't lost from the crowd, he was lost from his parents, and they had to learn to truly seek him rather than assume everything was fine. Many of us know that same sinking feeling when we realize we've been operating on assumptions and haven't actually looked carefully at what's right in front of us.
