What does Luke 2:43 mean?
When Jesus was twelve, his family traveled to Jerusalem for Passover as they did every year. After the festival ended and they started the long journey home with a large group of travelers, Mary and Joseph didn't realize Jesus had stayed behind in the city, probably because in the bustle of travel they assumed he was somewhere else in the caravan with relatives or friends. This moment captures something achingly human: the confusion and concern that comes when you suddenly realize someone you love is missing. What makes it tender is that Jesus wasn't lost or in danger—he was in the temple, absorbed in learning from the teachers there. But his parents didn't know that yet, and Luke is about to tell us how they frantically searched for him. Even as Jesus was beginning to understand his unique calling to God, he was still a child whose absence troubled his mother's heart.
