What does Luke 2:24 mean?
Mary and Joseph brought their newborn Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem following Jewish custom, and this verse describes the offering they made. Under Old Testament law, after childbirth a mother needed purification, and families brought a sacrifice—either two doves or two pigeons, depending on what they could afford. This was actually the more modest option available to poorer families, suggesting Jesus's earthly parents had humble means. By faithfully following this law, Mary and Joseph demonstrated their devotion to God and their place within the faithful community of Israel, even as they carried the extraordinary secret of who their son truly was.
