What does Luke 2:23 mean?
When Jesus was presented at the temple as a baby, Mary and Joseph followed an ancient Jewish law requiring them to dedicate their firstborn son to God. This wasn't a permanent giving-up, but rather a sacred acknowledgment that this child belonged to the Lord and a ritual of gratitude and blessing. The phrase "opens the womb" simply means being the firstborn, and calling such a child "holy to the Lord" meant setting him apart as special and claimed by God.
