Luke 19:11

As they heard these things, he went on and told a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that God’s Kingdom would be revealed immediately.

What does Luke 19:11 mean?

Jesus' followers were excited and hopeful as they traveled toward Jerusalem with him, expecting that God's long-promised kingdom was about to arrive right then and there. Jesus sensed this misunderstanding and told them a parable to gently redirect their expectations, helping them understand that God's plans wouldn't unfold quite the way they imagined. The parable that follows (about a nobleman and his servants) explains that there would be a gap of time before Jesus' return, and in the meantime, his followers have important work to do. If you've ever felt disappointed because God's timing didn't match your urgent hopes, this moment shows us that Jesus understands that struggle and speaks directly to it.
