Luke 18:7
“Won’t God avenge his chosen ones, who are crying out to him day and night, and yet he exercises patience with them?”
What does Luke 18:7 mean?
God is asking a rhetorical question here, essentially saying: "Of course I will bring justice to those who belong to me." The image of people crying out day and night reflects what real persistence in prayer feels like, especially when we're in pain or facing injustice. Jesus uses this to reassure us that God hears these desperate prayers and won't ignore them forever, even though it can feel like he's taking his time. The "patience" God exercises isn't indifference, but rather his willingness to work through history according to his purposes rather than our preferred timeline. If an earthly judge will eventually respond to someone who won't stop pestering him (as Jesus describes just before this), how much more will a loving God respond to those calling out to him? The message is meant to encourage us to keep praying and trusting, especially when circumstances feel hopeless.
