What does Luke 18:31 mean?

Jesus is preparing his closest followers for what's about to happen by reminding them that his suffering and death aren't random tragedy, but the fulfillment of God's long plan written in the Hebrew scriptures. He's telling them that the prophets saw this coming, and now it's actually going to occur. This is both a warning to help them understand and accept what's ahead, and an act of love, because he's trying to prepare their hearts before the confusion and pain arrive. For us today, it's a comfort that even in our darkest moments, we're not abandoned to meaningless suffering, but held within a larger story of God's purposes.
