What does Luke 18:23 mean?
When Jesus told the wealthy young man to sell everything and give it to the poor, something inside the man broke. His sadness wasn't about what he was being asked to do in theory, but about what it would actually cost him to follow Jesus. Sometimes we discover that what we think we want (spiritual depth, purpose, closeness to God) comes with a price we're not willing to pay, and that moment of truth can be devastating. This man's grief points to something real and human: we often cling to security and comfort, even when we sense they're keeping us from something better. His wealth wasn't evil, but it had become his confidence, his identity, his safety net. Jesus was asking him to transfer all that trust to God instead, and the man couldn't do it. The sadness he felt wasn't judgment from God, but the natural sorrow that comes when we realize we're choosing one thing over another, and we can't have both.
