What does Luke 18:14 mean?
Jesus is teaching us something deeply countercultural about how God sees us. The tax collector in the prayer story he just told couldn't even look up to heaven, only beating his chest and asking God for mercy, yet Jesus says he left the temple put right with God. Meanwhile, the self-righteous Pharisee left unchanged, despite listing all his spiritual accomplishments. The principle here is stark: God isn't impressed by our self-promotion or our ability to compare ourselves favorably to others. He responds to honest recognition of our need. When we come before him with genuine humility, admitting what we actually are rather than inflating who we pretend to be, something shifts. That transparency and vulnerability is what opens the door to real transformation and acceptance, not our carefully constructed image of ourselves.
