What does Luke 16:4 mean?
The dishonest manager in this parable has just been fired and is scrambling to secure his future. Facing homelessness and hardship, he devises a scheme: he'll reduce what his master's debtors owe, hoping they'll feel grateful enough to help him later. It's a cynical calculation, born from desperation and self-interest. Jesus uses this story not to praise dishonesty, but to challenge his followers: if someone willing to bend the rules shows such shrewd concern for their own security, shouldn't we be at least as intentional about using our resources wisely and building genuine relationships of trust? The manager recognizes that relationships matter more than clinging to a failing position, and there's something to learn from that instinct, even if his methods are wrong.
