What does Luke 14:9 mean?
Jesus is teaching about humility through a vivid social scenario. He's describing a wedding feast where you've chosen a place of honor, only to have the host ask you to move down when someone more important arrives, embarrassing you in front of everyone. The point isn't really about seating arrangements, though. He's showing that when we promote ourselves or seek status, we set ourselves up for public humiliation, while those who humbly take lower positions end up being honored instead. It's a gentle warning that our hunger for recognition often backfires, and there's both safety and dignity in letting go of the need to impress others.
