What does Luke 14:3 mean?

Jesus turns the tables on his critics with a question that cuts right to the heart of their concern. The Pharisees and lawyers watching him have strict rules about what counts as "work" on the Sabbath, and healing someone would violate those rules in their view. By asking whether it's lawful to heal, Jesus isn't uncertain about the answer; he's inviting them to think through their own beliefs about what matters most. He's essentially asking: if you saw someone suffering, would you really let a rule stop you from helping them? The question exposes the gap between their careful rule-keeping and the deeper purpose those rules were meant to serve, which was always about honoring God and caring for people.
