Luke 13:15
“Therefore the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each one of you free his ox or his donkey from the stall on the Sabbath, and lead him away to water?”
What does Luke 13:15 mean?
Jesus is pointing out a glaring double standard. A synagogue leader has just criticized him for healing a woman on the Sabbath, the holy day when Jewish law forbade work. Jesus responds by asking whether that same leader would refuse to give water to his thirsty animal on the Sabbath, and of course the answer is no, everyone does this naturally without guilt. He's showing that we all make exceptions to rules when something we care about is at stake. The leader values his animal's basic needs enough to break the Sabbath law for it, yet objects when Jesus shows compassion to a suffering person. The point cuts right to the heart: if you won't let a rule prevent you from caring for what matters to you, why would you let that same rule stop you from caring for another human being? It's a gentle but firm challenge to examine whether our convictions actually match our actions.
