What does Luke 12:40 mean?

Jesus is calling us to spiritual alertness because we don't know when he'll return. Rather than anxiously calculating dates or obsessing over signs, he's inviting us to live in a way that would be okay if he showed up tomorrow, whether that's in our actual lifetime or ages from now. It's less about nervous watchfulness and more about keeping our priorities straight, our hearts honest, and our relationships right. When we live ready this way, we're not caught off guard by judgment or filled with shame, but instead we're living the way we always should anyway.
