What does Luke 12:19 mean?
This is the wealthy man in Jesus's parable speaking to himself, congratulating himself on his financial security and planning to relax and enjoy life. He's convinced his money guarantees a carefree future, so he's giving himself permission to stop working and start indulging. The irony, which Jesus reveals in the next verse, is that this man dies that very night, making all his careful planning and self-assurance completely meaningless. The parable speaks to something many of us feel: the false comfort of thinking that enough stuff or enough money can protect us from life's uncertainties and give us lasting peace.
