“So you testify and consent to the works of your fathers. For they killed them, and you build their tombs.”
What does Luke 11:48 mean?
Jesus is confronting the religious leaders about a painful contradiction in their own behavior. Their ancestors persecuted and killed God's prophets, yet now these same leaders honor those prophets by building elaborate tombs for them. By doing this, Jesus says they're actually agreeing with what their fathers did, even as they pretend to condemn it. It's a sharp observation about how we can claim to respect people while continuing the very patterns that hurt them. The leaders wanted the appearance of reverence without the harder work of actually listening to God's messengers in their own time. Jesus is pushing them to ask whether their honor is genuine or just performance, and whether they're truly open to God's word or simply comfortable defending the status quo.
