What does Luke 11:40 mean?
Jesus is responding to the Pharisees who were critiquing him for not washing his hands before eating, a ritual requirement in their tradition. His point is sharp and direct: if God created both the physical body and the inner person, then obsessing over external cleanliness while neglecting what's happening inside—like greed, wickedness, or a lack of compassion—shows confused priorities. It's a reminder that God cares about the whole person, not just appearances. We might spend energy managing how things look on the surface while our hearts remain unchanged, and Jesus is suggesting that's backwards. When we're working on becoming better people, the inside transformation matters most.
