What does Luke 11:39 mean?

Jesus is pointing out a painful contradiction in how some religious leaders of his time operated. They were meticulous about washing dishes and following purity rules, keeping up an appearance of righteousness on the outside, but their hearts were driven by greed and harm toward others. It's a reminder that going through the motions of faith, religion, or even good behavior means very little if we're not also working on who we actually are on the inside. The challenge here isn't just for ancient Pharisees, but for anyone of us who might be more concerned with how we look to others than with becoming genuinely kinder, more honest, and more generous people.
