“Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’”
What does Luke 10:5 mean?
Jesus is instructing his disciples on how to carry their mission into homes they visit. The greeting "Peace be to this house" isn't just polite small talk, but a genuine spiritual wish rooted in Jewish tradition, where "shalom" (peace) encompassed wholeness, safety, and God's blessing. By starting with this blessing rather than diving straight into their message, the disciples were showing respect for the household and creating space for receptiveness to what would follow. This teaches us something beautiful about how to enter into any relationship or conversation: begin with goodwill and genuine care for the other person's wellbeing. When we approach someone with a sincere desire for their peace and flourishing rather than just what we want from them, we create an opening for something real to happen between us.
