What does Luke 10:25 mean?

A legal expert approaches Jesus with what sounds like a sincere question, but Luke tells us straight away that he's testing him, trying to trip him up or expose some flaw in his teaching. The question itself reveals something important: this man assumes eternal life is something you *earn* through the right actions, as if following the correct rules is a transaction. What unfolds after this moment becomes one of Scripture's most beloved teachings, because Jesus doesn't just answer the question directly. Instead, he turns it back on the lawyer, inviting him to examine his own understanding of God's law and, ultimately, his own heart. For anyone wrestling with what it takes to be right with God, this opening moment shows that Jesus often meets our questions not with easy answers, but with deeper truth about who we really are and what we truly need.
