What does Luke 1:33 mean?

This promise describes Jesus as the fulfillment of God's ancient covenant with David, when God swore that David's descendant would rule an eternal kingdom. Unlike earthly governments that rise and fall, the angel Gabriel is telling Mary that her son's reign will have no expiration date and no rival power that could overthrow it. For people listening to Luke's Gospel, this would have been extraordinary news, because they lived under Roman occupation and desperately hoped for a ruler who would truly set things right. The "kingdom" Luke mentions isn't primarily about political borders or military power, but about God's transforming rule in human hearts and communities, a reign that continues today and will ultimately be completed when Christ returns.
