Leviticus 5:16

He shall make restitution for that which he has done wrong in the holy thing, and shall add a fifth part to it, and give it to the priest; and the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and he will be forgiven.

What does Leviticus 5:16 mean?

When someone accidentally misused something sacred or wronged God's community in a spiritual way, they couldn't just say sorry and move on. They had to restore what they'd damaged by repaying the full amount plus an extra twenty percent, then bring a ram as a guilt offering. This wasn't about harsh punishment but about taking the wrong seriously enough to make genuine repair. The additional fifth showed that breaking trust costs something real, and the priest's role with the offering symbolized that reconciliation with God happens through both our own responsibility and God's willingness to accept our repentance.
