Leviticus 3:2
“He shall lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the Tent of Meeting: and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall sprinkle the blood around on the altar.”
What does Leviticus 3:2 mean?
This verse describes part of the peace offering ritual, where someone bringing a gift to God would place their hand on the animal, acknowledging both their connection to it and their intention to offer it. The act of laying on hands was deeply personal, a way of saying "this is my offering, my gift, my gratitude" before the priest took over the ceremonial work. The blood sprinkling that followed wasn't meant to be gruesome but rather powerful and sacred, signifying that life itself was being presented to God. In the ancient Israelite system, blood represented the life force, so sprinkling it around the altar was the most solemn way of saying that you were giving your very best back to God. This kind of offering, unlike a sin offering, was one of fellowship and thanksgiving, often shared as a meal afterward, which is why it's called a "peace offering."
