““‘If a man dedicates to Yahweh part of the field of his possession, then your valuation shall be according to the seed for it. The sowing of a homer of barley shall be valued at fifty shekels of silver.”
What does Leviticus 27:16 mean?
When someone in ancient Israel wanted to give part of their land to God's service, this verse establishes how to fairly determine what that gift is worth. Rather than letting people name their own price (which could be dishonest), the value was based on how much seed the land could hold, using barley as the standard measure. A homer of barley seed (roughly 11 bushels) was worth fifty shekels of silver, creating an objective way to honor both the giver's intention and God's due.
