Leviticus 27:15
“If he who dedicates it will redeem his house, then he shall add the fifth part of the money of your valuation to it, and it shall be his.”
What does Leviticus 27:15 mean?
When someone had dedicated their own house to God's service but then wanted to keep it, they could buy it back, but there was a cost for changing their mind. They had to repay the valuation the priest had set, plus an extra twenty percent on top. This wasn't a punishment so much as a practical acknowledgment that sacred commitments shouldn't be reversed on a whim. The principle here speaks to something deeper: when we make promises to God, there are real consequences to reconsidering them. The added fifth might seem like a penalty, but it was really a way of saying that spiritual commitments matter and shouldn't be entered lightly or abandoned carelessly.
