Leviticus 25:28

But if he isn’t able to get it back for himself, then what he has sold shall remain in the hand of him who has bought it until the Year of Jubilee: and in the Jubilee it shall be released, and he shall return to his property.

What does Leviticus 25:28 mean?

This verse speaks to one of Israel's most radical economic practices: the Jubilee, a year that came every fifty years when debts were forgiven and sold land returned to its original owners. If someone had fallen into such desperate poverty that they sold their family property but couldn't afford to buy it back before the Jubilee arrived, they didn't lose it forever. The land would automatically revert to them, giving even the poorest families a chance to start fresh. It's a stunning recognition that no one should be permanently trapped in poverty or lose their ancestral home because of hard times. For those experiencing financial strain or feeling stuck, this verse reminds us that God's design includes compassion and the possibility of restoration.
