Leviticus 25:27
βthen let him reckon the years since its sale, and restore the surplus to the man to whom he sold it; and he shall return to his property.β
What does Leviticus 25:27 mean?
In ancient Israel, if someone sold their land because of hardship, they had the right to buy it back once they had the means. This verse describes what happens when they do: they calculate how many years have passed since the original sale, pay back only the remaining value (not overpaying for years already lived), and then reclaim their ancestral property. It's a beautiful protection built into the system, ensuring that temporary poverty wouldn't permanently strip a family of their inheritance and livelihood. The law recognized that circumstances change, and it created a pathway for people to restore what they'd lost.
