What does Leviticus 25:2 mean?
When the Israelites settled in their promised land, God established a rhythm for the soil itself: every seventh year, the fields would rest completely, left unplanted and unharvested. This wasn't about practicality or crop rotation (though it had those benefits), but about recognizing that the land ultimately belonged to God, not to the people working it. By letting the earth lie fallow, the community was making a spiritual statement that their security came from God's provision, not from their own constant striving. It's a beautiful picture of trust, one that applied equally to rich landowners and poor workers, since even those without fields benefited from the year when debts were forgiven and enslaved people went free.
