What does Leviticus 25:16 mean?
In ancient Israel, land sales weren't permanent the way we think of them today. Every fifty years, all land returned to its original owners in a jubilee celebration, so when someone sold land, they were really selling the right to harvest crops from it until that jubilee arrived. This verse explains how to fairly price that transaction: if many harvest seasons remained before the land reverted, the price should be higher; if few seasons remained, the price should be lower. It's a practical economic principle built on the assumption that land belongs ultimately to God, not to any individual forever. The goal was to prevent wealthy people from accumulating land at the expense of families who fell on hard times, making it a surprisingly forward-thinking protection for the vulnerable.
