Leviticus 25:11
“That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee to you. In it you shall not sow, neither reap that which grows of itself, nor gather from the undressed vines.”
What does Leviticus 25:11 mean?
Every fifty years, the Israelites would declare a jubilee year, a time of radical rest and restoration. During this year, people were forbidden from planting crops or harvesting what naturally grew, which meant trusting God to provide through whatever the land already offered. This wasn't just a break for tired farmers, but a reset button for the whole community: debts were forgiven, enslaved people were freed, and land returned to its original owners. The jubilee expressed a beautiful belief that God ultimately owns everything and that human systems of debt and ownership shouldn't trap people forever. For those of us today, it invites us to consider what would it mean to build rest, forgiveness, and second chances into our lives, rather than assuming everything depends on our constant striving.
