What does Leviticus 22:6 mean?
In ancient Israel's temple system, holiness was treated as something contagious in both directions. If a priest touched something unclean (whether through illness, bodily discharge, or contact with death), that uncleanness would transfer to them and temporarily disqualify them from handling sacred offerings or entering holy spaces. The washing ritual wasn't about hygiene in the modern sense, but rather a prescribed way of restoring someone's fitness to participate in worship. By evening, after bathing, a person would be considered clean again and could resume their duties. This reflects a worldview where spiritual readiness mattered for those serving in God's presence, and where restoration was always available through proper steps of purification.
