What does Leviticus 21:5 mean?
God was establishing distinctive practices that would set apart the priests who served in the temple. These rules about beards and cutting the flesh were meant to keep them visibly different from the surrounding pagan cultures, where such practices were common in rituals for false gods and the dead. By maintaining these specific grooming standards, the priests would remind the community (and themselves) of their sacred calling and their separation to God's service. The point wasn't that beards are inherently spiritual, but that obedience to God's particular instructions matters, and visible differences can strengthen identity and purpose.
