Leviticus 21:4
“He shall not defile himself, being a chief man among his people, to profane himself.”
What does Leviticus 21:4 mean?
A priest held a special position in the community and had certain responsibilities to stay ritually pure. This verse reflects the Old Testament understanding that those who led worship needed to maintain themselves differently than others, partly as a sign of their dedication and partly out of respect for the sacred work they did. The idea isn't about spiritual superiority, but about recognizing that some roles carry particular obligations. For us today, it's worth considering how the commitments we make to God or to serving others might call us to live intentionally, even when it costs us something.
