What does Leviticus 21:2 mean?
A priest in ancient Israel was normally forbidden from becoming ceremonially unclean by touching a dead body, since his role required him to serve in the temple. But this verse acknowledges the deeper reality that family bonds are sacred too. A priest was permitted to grieve and care for his closest relatives at death, even though it meant temporarily stepping back from his duties. The list moves from mother and father (those who gave life) through children to siblings, recognizing these as the relationships that run deepest. It's a beautiful reminder that God doesn't ask us to abandon love and loyalty to family in the name of religious duty, but rather sees those bonds as part of what makes us human and holy.
