What does Leviticus 21:1 mean?

God instructed Moses to tell the priests they shouldn't participate in certain death rituals that were common in surrounding cultures. This rule kept priests set apart for their sacred duties in the tabernacle, where they served as mediators between God and the community. The restriction acknowledged that contact with death created ritual impurity under the Old Testament system, and priests needed to maintain their purity to enter holy spaces and offer sacrifices on behalf of others. It's a concrete way the law expressed that God's representatives were to be dedicated to life and worship, not entangled in the practices the surrounding nations used to process grief and honor the dead.
