Leviticus 11:44

For I am Yahweh your God. Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any kind of creeping thing that moves on the earth.

What does Leviticus 11:44 mean?

God's invitation here is to mirror his own character, which is fundamentally pure and set apart. The specific dietary laws about creatures that creep on the earth were how ancient Israel practiced this holiness in their daily lives, turning something as routine as eating into a spiritual discipline. When God says to "sanctify yourselves," he's calling people to intentionally separate themselves from what's unclean, not as punishment but as a way of honoring the holy one they belong to. For us today, while these particular food rules were fulfilled in Christ, the deeper principle remains: we're invited to live in a way that reflects God's character, letting even our ordinary choices point toward something sacred.
