What does Judges 9:18 mean?
Jotham is speaking to the people of Shechem, reminding them of a terrible betrayal. His father Gideon (also called Jerubbaal) had led them and fathered many sons, but after Gideon's death, the people turned on his family and killed almost all of his sons in a single brutal act. They then crowned Abimelech, who was only half-Gideonite (born to Gideon's servant woman), as their king simply because he shared their ethnicity. The verse captures Jotham's shock and accusation: you've committed murder and installed an illegitimate ruler based on mere tribal connection rather than character or justice. He's calling out how quickly the people abandoned loyalty to a leader who had helped them, replacing gratitude with violence and poor judgment. It's a sobering moment about how communities can forget those who've served them and make destructive choices when fear or self-interest takes over.
