What does Judges 9:14 mean?
This is the punchline of a parable told by Jotham to warn the people of Shechem against crowning his brother Abimelech as king. In the story, the useful trees (olive, fig, and vine) have all refused to leave their important work to rule, so the desperate trees turn to the bramble, a thorny, worthless plant that offers nothing but destruction. Jotham is saying that by choosing Abimelech, they've rejected someone of actual value and character in favor of someone violent and self-serving who will burn them all down. It's a stinging message about how desperation can lead communities to make terrible choices, settling for a leader who will ultimately harm them rather than waiting for something better.
