What does Judges 8:22 mean?
The people of Israel, grateful for Gideon's military victory and leadership, are asking him to become their king and establish a dynasty. This moment reveals a fundamental shift in Israel's identity, since up until now they'd been led by judges who were called by God for specific crises, not by hereditary kings. The Israelites are essentially asking to reorganize their entire system of governance around one person and his family line. What makes this particularly poignant is that Gideon has just won a remarkable battle, and the people naturally want to honor him and secure his continued protection. Yet this request also shows how easily we can slip into looking to human leaders for ultimate salvation and security, even after witnessing God's direct intervention.
