“Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Rise and fall on us; for as the man is, so is his strength.” Gideon arose, and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels’ necks.”
What does Judges 8:21 mean?
After a brutal military campaign, Gideon has captured two enemy kings who previously killed his own brothers. Rather than beg for mercy, Zebah and Zalmunna acknowledge that Gideon has proven himself through his strength and victory, essentially saying he has the right and the power to execute them. They're accepting their defeat with a kind of resigned dignity. Gideon follows through with their execution and takes the crescent ornaments from the camels, which were likely valuable royal insignia. What's worth noticing here is that Gideon is acting as both judge and avenger for his family, which was partly his right in ancient Near Eastern culture, but the text doesn't explicitly celebrate this moment the way it does his earlier victories.
