Judges 6:40
“God did so that night; for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.”
What does Judges 6:40 mean?
Gideon had asked God for a sign to confirm he was hearing correctly: he'd put a fleece of wool on the ground and asked God to make it wet with dew while keeping the surrounding ground dry. When God did exactly that, Gideon asked for one more sign, but in reverse, this time making the fleece dry and the ground wet. This verse records God honoring that second request. What makes this moment tender is that Gideon was genuinely afraid and uncertain about the enormous task ahead of him. God could have brushed off his requests as signs of doubt, but instead responded with patience to reassure him. Sometimes when we're scared or unsure, we need confirmation that we're on the right path, and this passage shows God meeting us there with gentleness rather than judgment. Gideon's willingness to keep asking and God's willingness to keep answering reminds us that our uncertainty doesn't disqualify us from doing what God has called us to do.
