Judges 6:39
“Gideon said to God, “Don’t let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece. Let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.””
What does Judges 6:39 mean?
Gideon has already asked God for one sign with his fleece, and God gave it to him. But standing at the edge of a massive battle, Gideon is still afraid and asks for another sign, this time reversed: he wants the fleece dry while the ground around it is wet with dew. He's almost apologizing to God for asking again, worried that God might be frustrated with his constant need for reassurance. This moment captures something deeply human about faith: sometimes we believe, but our fear makes us ask for one more confirmation, and then one more. Gideon isn't being punished for his doubt here. God honors this second request, which suggests that God understands our struggle to trust, especially when we're facing something that terrifies us. His willingness to ask shows he's not pretending to be braver than he is, and God meets him where he actually stands.
