Judges 6:13
“Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.””
What does Judges 6:13 mean?
Gideon is wrestling with a painful gap between what he's been taught about God and what he's actually experiencing. His people have grown up hearing stories of God's mighty rescue from Egypt, yet now they're suffering under Midianite oppression, and God feels distant or absent. His question isn't really asking for information, it's a cry of confusion and hurt: "If God is truly with us, why does it feel like he's abandoned us?" This is an honest prayer that many of us recognize in our own seasons of difficulty. Gideon isn't being punished for asking, and neither are we when we bring our doubts and disappointments to God. Sometimes faith means holding onto what we know to be true about God's character while also being real about how little we understand our current circumstances.
