Judges 6:11
“Yahweh’s angel came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. His son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites.”
What does Judges 6:11 mean?
Gideon was doing something unusual and desperate: threshing wheat in a wine press instead of on an open threshing floor where the wind could naturally separate grain from chaff. He had to hide his work because the Midianites had been raiding Israel for seven years, stealing crops and livestock, leaving the people impoverished and afraid. This small detail tells us everything about Gideon's situation—he wasn't a celebrated leader or warrior, just an ordinary young man trying to secretly gather enough food to survive. When God's angel appears to him under an oak tree, Gideon is at his most vulnerable and least likely to seem like someone capable of leading a nation. That contrast is important to the whole story: God often calls people when they feel smallest and most uncertain.
