Judges 2:7
“The people served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Yahweh that he had worked for Israel.”
What does Judges 2:7 mean?
After Joshua led Israel into the promised land, the people remained faithful to God during his lifetime and continued to do so while the elders who had witnessed God's mighty deeds were still alive. These witnesses to the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and God's protection in the wilderness carried their faith forward and kept the community anchored in remembrance of what God had done. Once that generation of eyewitnesses passed away, however, the next generation gradually drifted from faith, which this chapter goes on to describe. It's a poignant reminder that spiritual commitment often depends on living connection to God's work in our lives, and that passing faith on to the next generation requires more than just stories, it takes active remembrance and relationship.
