Judges 15:4
“Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches, and turned tail to tail, and put a torch in the middle between every two tails.”
What does Judges 15:4 mean?
Samson is at war with the Philistines, and in his anger, he devises a deliberately destructive plan. He catches hundreds of foxes, ties their tails together in pairs, and fastens lit torches between them so that the terrified animals will run wildly through the Philistine grain fields, destroying the harvest. It's a strange and brutal image, but it shows how far Samson will go to harm his enemies, and how his strength makes him capable of executing plans that ordinary people simply couldn't accomplish. The passage illustrates both his power and his willingness to cause massive collateral damage when he's seeking revenge. For those of us struggling with anger or retaliation, this story offers a cautionary picture of where unchecked rage can lead, no matter how justified we feel.
