Judges 11:18
“Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.”
What does Judges 11:18 mean?
This passage describes the Israelites taking a careful detour around hostile territory during their journey toward the Promised Land. Rather than passing directly through Edom and Moab, they respectfully skirted around these lands and camped safely on the far side of the Arnon River, which marked Moab's boundary. The repeated emphasis that they "didn't come within the border of Moab" shows their restraint, even though they had military strength. This moment reveals something beautiful about respecting others' boundaries and choosing the harder right path over the easier wrong one. Sometimes following God's leading means taking the longer route and showing courtesy even when we could take what we want, and that kind of integrity matters deeply.
